Going out

Oxford is packed with buzzing places to go for a drink or a meal in the evening.

There are restaurants to suit all tastes and representing all cuisines. Check out the Oxford Restaurant Guide.

A lively pub scene includes some iconic venues. Why not try the Eagle and Child in St Giles where C S Lewis and Tolkien used to meet their friends and where, more recently, Inspector Morse could be seen in the famous ITV detective series.

Alternatively, you could try the vibrant Cowley Road, where Oxford’s diverse communities meet. There are fascinating shops, lots of friendly pubs and the O2 Academy Oxford venue. You will be walking in the steps of some famous Oxford bands including Radiohead, Foals, Supergrass and Ride.

Oxford city centre has most of the major retailers and dozens of smaller specialist shops. The Covered Market is a particular favourite, especially at Christmas when the food stores that traditionally supply the college kitchens are seen at their best.
