Major ongoing project for the Grade 1 listed building.
One of Christ Church's major ongoing projects is the renovation of Peckwater Quad - a Grade 1 listed building completed in 1713. 'Peck', as it is also known, was regarded as a masterpiece of Palladian Architecture. The great architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner describes it as 'impeccably uniform'.
Each set of rooms comprised a large front room and two smaller back rooms and the 'sets' were much sought after, especially as increasing numbers of wealthy, aristocratic young men were coming to Christ Church during this time.
Nowadays the sitting rooms are shared by two undergraduates with a small bedroom each. Work began in Michaelmas Term 2015 and Stage 1 was completed last June, with three staircases being refurbished for the first time since the 1970s and ensuites added to some bedrooms.
