St Cross College’s Second Quad Nears Completion
St Cross College's second quad will soon be completed with the West Quad Building, which will provide extensive lecture, conference and meeting facilities on its ground floor. The building has been designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects, who received a RIBA National Award and were shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2015 for their work on Darbishire Place in Whitechapel.
The West Quad building is finished beautifully in Clipsham stone, and striking mullions surround the large windows, allowing plenty of natural light into the building. Artist Alison Kinnaird MBE has provided the building with its public art, with an elegant etched window bearing the College's motto 'ad quattuor cardines mundi' - to the four corners of the earth.
The new lecture theatre seats 80, and opens out onto the reception area leading onto landscaped gardens at the centre of the Quad. The building will also house two purpose-built seminar rooms that can be divided into smaller break-out spaces, and a cafe garden room provides an informal and flexible space.
The new building will allow the College to provide flexible and generous state-of-the-art facilities for all manner of conferences and events, right in the heart of Oxford.
