This month will see works commence on the redevelopment and refurbishment of Rhodes House
Rhodes House has been a member of Conference Oxford for over 15 years, and is well known for hosting high-quality events in the beautiful, historic building and magnificent gardens.
However, few people who have attended events at the House will have ventured into the deep basements which extend beneath the full footprint of the building. These cavernous spaces have been largely vacant since the Bodleian Library relocated their collections to new facilities in 2015.
The new scheme from architects Stanton Williams and Pendery Architecture and Heritage, will see the beautifully original architecture gently refurbished and restored above ground, while the basement will be converted into a conference facility capable of hosting events for up to 300 people.
The conference hall will benefit from views of the gardens and natural light from extensive high-level windows. The sub-divisible space will be equipped with the latest technology, including high definition video-walls, video streaming facilities to enable virtual delegates to interact fully with those present in the room, a dual-language simultaneous interpretation system and comprehensive facilities to support those with impaired sight or hearing.
The hall will be supported by a large foyer featuring extensive lightwells, where catering and receptions can take place. The historic reception rooms and grand-hall above ground will remain available for formal dinners and receptions. The project will introduce lifts throughout the building to give full and equitable access to those with restricted mobility.
In addition to the conference suite, a new glass pavilion building situated in the landscaped gardens will provide a unique setting for events with up to 45 delegates.
The scheme will provide 40 new ensuite bedrooms spread across the East-Wing of the building and a new residential facility in the East garden, where beautiful earth-sheltered bedrooms will be accessed from a sunken open-air courtyard.
The works commence in November, and it is anticipated that the scheme will take two years to complete. We will be taking new business enquiries from October 2021, and should you have any queries regarding the new facilities in the meantime, we can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org or +44 (0) 1865 282599.
We look forward to re-opening our doors to existing and new customers, and to the wider Oxford Community in 2022!
